Devo Why Tongues Part 17
Acts 19:1-7 (NIV)
19 While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples 2 and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when[a] you believed?”
They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
3 So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?”
“John’s baptism,” they replied.
4 Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. 7 There were about twelve men in all.
This is our fifth and last time there is a mentioning of the infilling of the Baptism in the Holy in the Holy Spirit and we see clearly the spoke in tongues. Now out of the five events of the in filling of the Holy Spirit three say they spoke in tongues, one only speaks in general but later we’re told spoke in tongues, and one say that a witness saw they were filled. Something clearly took place that he knew they were filled. I think it is clearly hard to argue otherwise. Furthermore people are still being Baptized with the Holy Spirit today all over the world and speak in other tongues and have other evidences that confirm the infilling. What more does one need, but still people rebel against the tongues. Why? Because the power is in the tongue, the Holy Spirit speaking through us.

Devo Why Tongues Part 15
Acts 9:10-19 (NIV)
10 In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!” “Yes, Lord,” he answered. 11 The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. 12 In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.” 13 “Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your holy people in Jerusalem. 14 And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.” 15 But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel. 16 I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.” 17 Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18 Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, 19 and after taking some food, he regained his strength. Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus.
1 Corinthians 14:18 (NIV)
18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.
Here we see the third time the after the day of Pentecost that someone was filled with the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. Paul was said to be filled, but here there is no mention of tongues. The was the writer gives the account is as though in passing and not detail. We find latter though Paul states he speaks in tongues more than anyone, so we know Paul did receive tongues after he was Baptized in the Holy Spirit.

Devo Why Tongues Part 14
Acts 8:14-25 (NIV)
14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
18 When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money 19 and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”
20 Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! 21 You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God. 22 Repent of this wickedness and pray to the Lord in the hope that he may forgive you for having such a thought in your heart. 23 For I see that you are full of bitterness and captive to sin.”
24 Then Simon answered, “Pray to the Lord for me so that nothing you have said may happen to me.”
25 After they had further proclaimed the word of the Lord and testified about Jesus, Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many Samaritan villages.
This is incident number two. Though it does not specifically say they spoke in tongues it does make clear something visibly happened. I believe that Simon heard them speak in tongues and wanted the power to impart the same. There was a physical manifestation of the presence of the Holy Spirit. We will put this on a shelf for now, because the later incidences will show the truth. Noteworthy is that the Baptism was imparted through the laying on of hands, and these were not pure Jews they were considered half breeds. They were Jews who had mixed with an unholy race. God forgave and filled them showing He accepted them and made them Holy.

Acts 2:1-4 (NIV)
The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.
There are five incidences of people receiving the Baptism of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament. We will look at all of them over the next lessons. Here we clearly see that when they were filled they spoke in tongues as the Spirit enabled them. I try to make clear it was as the Spirit enabled them, because I have seen people try to teach people tongues. This is pure hogwash, lol. The Spirit has to enable you to speak in tongues, it is not learned by man. What I am getting at though is Tongues is the evidence and in fact a necessary part of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

Devo Why Tongues Part 12
2 Corinthians 3:7-11 (NIV)
7 Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, transitory though it was, 8 will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? 9 If the ministry that brought condemnation was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness! 10 For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. 11 And if what was transitory came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!
Acts 2:38-41 (NIV)
38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” 40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.
Exodus 32:25-29 (NIV)
25 Moses saw that the people were running wild and that Aaron had let them get out of control and so become a laughingstock to their enemies. 26 So he stood at the entrance to the camp and said, “Whoever is for the Lord, come to me.” And all the Levites rallied to him. 27 Then he said to them, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Each man strap a sword to his side. Go back and forth through the camp from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbor.’” 28 The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people died. 29 Then Moses said, “You have been set apart to the Lord today, for you were against your own sons and brothers, and he has blessed you this day.”
This seems obvious to me, but I will explain. Moses came down the mountain with the Ten Commandments and under the law they brought to us death. The Law only made us aware that we were sinners and were guilty. It brought no life to us unless we obeyed it. It was still glorious but it brought us only a fearful expectation of punishment and three thousand fell to their death by sword that day. In contrast on the day of Pentecost after the out pouring of the Holy Spirit, when the word was preached there thousand were given eternal life. The power to give life is in the breathing, speaking, of the Holy Spirit. Tongues release life. If you don’t know how to pray. Pray in the Spirit. (A later lesson) The Spirit giveth life. People must be prayed into the kingdom. Only when Aaron the high Priest put fire from the altar of God into his censer and stood between the living and the dead did the plague stop. (Numbers 16:46-50) The censer represents the prayer of the saints. (Revelation 5:8) You are God’s sensor put God’s fire in you and pray, for you are what stands between the living and the dead. We must pray them into the kingdom through the Holy Spirit.

Ephesians 6:10-12 (NIV) 10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Ephesians 6:17 (NIV) 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
2 Timothy 3:16 (NIV) 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,
Acts 19:11-16 (NIV) 11 God did extraordinary miracles through Paul, 12 so that even handkerchiefs and aprons that had touched him were taken to the sick, and their illnesses were cured and the evil spirits left them. 13 Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” 14 Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15 One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” 16 Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.
Oh how many times have I heard Ephesians 6:17 misquoted? It says that the Sword is the Spirit, which is the Word of God. The Spirit inspired men of God to write the word of God. The word without the Spirit does not carry the power of God. Take a look at the seven son’s of Sceva no Spirit no power. Without the Spirit the word is lifeless. In fact it can bring death and destruction in the month of a uninspired person. (See Satan use of God’s word, Pharisees, Sadducees and other religious leaders) The word of God must have the Spirit to have power. The Spirit does the work. The prophets of old or the New Testament had no power till the Spirit came upon them. Paul knew God’s word but it brought death in His life until he received the Holy Spirit. Take away the tongues no power. The Tongues is the power of the believer from God. Jesus the saint will overthrow the world by blood of the lamb and the word of their testimony. It say we will be witnesses when the Holy Spirit comes on us. Read next devotion.

Devo Why Tongues Part 10
Mark 16:14-20 (NIV)
14 Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen.
15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”
19 After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. 20 Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.
This declaration by Jesus is part of the new covenant, to do away with part of it is to do away with all of it. You can’t save salvation and do away with the rest. It is not a smorgasbord that you get to pick and choose. It is a package deal. Many want to do away with tongues. Why, because Satan knows the power of the believer is in the tongue. Silence tongues and who would be saved or delivered from bondage?
It was the religious people who did not recognize who Jesus was or the work of the Holy Spirit. They nailed Him to a cross to stop God’s work by shutting Him up, and now they try to silence the Apostles telling them not to preach in His name. Now they try to silence the Holy Spirit by shutting the months of believers. There is no tongues they say. Babel no power. Well if shutting the mouth of people has no power then why did God confuse the language of man at the tower of Babel? It has always been religious people who fought against the work of the Holy Spirit. (See Stephen’s speech before they stoned him) Tongues is the sword of the Spirit we are to fight with. Take away our spiritual weapon and we can’t fight. Tongues brings about the will of God on earth through intercession. It brings about the miraculous signs that confirm God’s word. Tongues is the initial evidence of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, then signs will follow. Show me what’s your evidence Mr. religious leader? Signs will accompany those who preach God’s word. It is not a form of Godliness that denies the power of God, but action. It can’t be taught. It was bought. Knowledge will not conform us to be like or do the works of God, that was the lies of Satan. What’s in your walk? Where’s your confirmation? Jesus dropped His Mantel for us, pick it up and put it on and do His work.
