Devo What is faith?
Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)
11 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. James 1:22 (NIV)
22 Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.
James 2:19-24 (NIV)
19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder. 20 You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? 21 Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness, and he was called God’s friend. 24 You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.
1 John 5:1-5 (NIV)
5 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
The God kind of faith is devotion through obedience to God out of love for Him. You cannot separate love, devotion, and obedience from faith in God. Faith in God always has evidence which leads to substance. People say they believe in God, but where is the evidence. The evidence as James says is in our actions. Demons believe there is a God but are not devoted or obedient to Him. Plainly put, if you love Him you will obey His commands. You live a righteous life. You do as Abraham did and do what He says. No evidence, no faith. There is a doctrine out there that calls this legalism. Faith is not a feeling, it is action. 1 John 5:18 tells us if we continue in our sin we are not born of God. Jesus came to fulfill the law not do away with it. We obey the moral law not out of obligation, but love and devotion for Him. We desire to please Him out of love. You see love and faith are inseparable. What got us into this mess? It was sin. What must be overcome? It is sin. Jesus overcame sin though death and gave us the tools to walk a righteous life and overcome it also. We follow in His footsteps and do as He did. Think about it. Why do we need the fire of the Holy Spirit? It is to overcome sin? Overcome sin and overcome in every area of your life. Not by might, nor by power, but by the Spirit.
