Devo Why do we need the Holy Spirit if Jesus forgave our sin
Luke 3:16 (NIV)
16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Acts 1:8 (NIV)
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Numbers 31:21-23 (NIV)
21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, “This is what is required by the law that the Lord gave Moses: 22 Gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, lead 23 and anything else that can withstand fire must be put through the fire, and then it will be clean. But it must also be purified with the water of cleansing. And whatever cannot withstand fire must be put through that water.
Jesus came that we might be forgiven our sins, but also came that we could overcome sin. He sent the Holy Spirit to give us the power to overcome sin and that it would no longer master us, but we would master it. You see, Satan’s power over us in this world is sin and if we continue in sin he can control us. Jesus sent the fire of the Holy Spirit to cleanse us of the control of sin in this life. Satan has no control over a sinless life. Even Balaam told the king of Moab that the only way to make Israel fall is if you can get them to sin against their God and He will hand them over to you. Fire was used in the Old Testament to cleanse. God used fire to consume the sinners in Israel often times to get the sin out of the camp. Israel could not stand before AI because of one sin and they were but a small city. Sin is the power of Satan and righteousness is the power of God. How can we be witnesses for God? Get the sin out and Satan has no power. We can overcome the world.
