Devo Authority for the child of God Part One
Genesis 49:1-12 (NIV)
49 Then Jacob called for his sons and said: “Gather around so I can tell you what will happen to you in days to come. 2 “Assemble and listen, sons of Jacob;
listen to your father Israel. 3 “Reuben, you are my firstborn,
my might, the first sign of my strength,
excelling in honor, excelling in power.
4 Turbulent as the waters, you will no longer excel,
for you went up onto your father’s bed,
onto my couch and defiled it. 5 “Simeon and Levi are brothers--
their swords are weapons of violence.
6 Let me not enter their council,
let me not join their assembly,
for they have killed men in their anger
and hamstrung oxen as they pleased.
7 Cursed be their anger, so fierce,
and their fury, so cruel!
I will scatter them in Jacob
and disperse them in Israel. 8 “Judah, your brothers will praise you;
your hand will be on the neck of your enemies;
your father’s sons will bow down to you.
9 You are a lion’s cub, Judah;
you return from the prey, my son.
Like a lion he crouches and lies down,
like a lioness—who dares to rouse him?
10 The scepter will not depart from Judah,
nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
until he to whom it belongs shall come
and the obedience of the nations shall be his.
11 He will tether his donkey to a vine,
his colt to the choicest branch;
he will wash his garments in wine,
his robes in the blood of grapes.
12 His eyes will be darker than wine,
his teeth whiter than milk.
This may seem a strange place to start on this subject but stick with me. The Jewish family had a hierarchy just as all Middle East families. The father was the head of the home usually followed by the eldest son who would become the patriarch. It is this hierarchy that the west has rejected and made it hard for us to understand God and His relationship to His Son and children. The eldest son was heir to the throne so to speak. The father made the decision for the clan and when He died the eldest son took over. They believed that the right to rule the family came to the eldest, because God made the eldest for that purpose, but he could lose that right. When Europe had kings they believed the same, but in this country we rebelled against the King and seem to think it is our right to rebel. This is another subject. The oldest son could lose that right and the patriarch could choose another. Esau sold his right to Jacob and could not get it back. The oldest son or preferred son got twice what the other sons got in authority and inheritance. Now Reuben, Jacob’s oldest, lost his right because he had sex with his father’s wife. Simeon and Levi lost their right because they killed to avenged there sister’s honor in anger and killed many innocent people. Levi would later get the priesthood because he used his anger to avenge the Lord’s honor. I do think it note worthy to say God used this warrior to be His priest over the people. Judah lost His position because of sin for ten generations, (in accordance with the law), but would get the scepter back and that was David who received that right and still has it forever through Christ. The honor ended up going to Joseph, but it would eventually pass. God chooses, not man.
