Devo The Church Part 8
Mark 11:12-14 (NIV)
12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.
Mark 11:20-25 (NIV)
20 In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”
22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. 23 “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours. 25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”
Now keep in mind this took place the week between Jesus entering the Jerusalem and the people praising Him one weekend and crucifying Him the next and this is moments before He clears the temple for the last time. Jesus walks up to this fig tree in leaf, but it was not the season for figs, it was early. This tree was in leaf and when fig trees come into leaf they should have fruit. It had a form of a fruit bearing tree, it was pretty, but no fruit. Every tree that does not bear fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire. It enticed you to come to it, but did not deliver. It just took up soil. Then Jesus talks about faith. Faith produces fruit. Know a tree by its fruit. He goes on to say you can believe and move mountains, but we must do as He does and forgive. He was on His way to be crucified for the forgiveness of all. He uprooted the Old Covenant which did not produce fruit and replaced it with one that did.

Devo The Church Part 7
2 Timothy 3:1-9 (NIV)
3 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.
6 They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, 7 always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. 9 But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.
Jannes and Jambres and were the sorcerers who opposed Moses before Pharaoh. They had a form of Godliness. They seemed to do what Moses did, but were evil. I want you to think about the symbolism here. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert so Jesus became sin and the curse for us. Moses’ staff becomes a snake and then a dead stick again. Moses had control over it. Jannes and Jambres try to do the same thing, but Moses’s snake eats theirs. Moses’ staff delivers. His staff goes on to set the captives free. Jannes and Jambres could not eventually even stand before Moses because they are cursed and covered with boils. (Exodus 9:11) They didn’t get very far did they. We don’t need a church with a form of Godliness, but God’s righteousness through Jesus our Lord. He became the sin and curse for us, so we could be righteous as God is righteous. No form but delivered from sin and set free.

Devo The Church Part 6
Proverbs 15:29 (KJV)
29 The Lord is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.
James 5:16 (KJV)
16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
Jesus said my house shall be called a house of prayer, but for pray to have an effect it must be done in righteousness. God hears the prayers of the righteous. He hears the prayers of faith. Faith is obedience. Tithing is believing God will do what He says. We give God back a tenth knowing He will bless us for it. Faith is obedience. Abraham was considered righteous for what he did. He obeyed God and offered up his son to God. Faith is believing God and doing what He says then God hears our prayers and answers them.

Mark 16:15-20 (NIV)
15 He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; 18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well.”
19 After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven and he sat at the right hand of God. 20 Then the disciples went out and preached everywhere, and the Lord worked with them and confirmed his word by the signs that accompanied it.
God told the church to go, not sit. We are to go, and His presence will go with us and He will confirm His word with signs and wonders. People will be saved and healed. We are to go into all the earth not just our little world. We are to be a people of action. The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Barns don’t fill themselves and neither do churches.

Devo The church part 4
James 3:3-4 (NIV)
3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.
Just as the tongue is the rudder of the ship, God gave tongues on the day of Pentecost to the church as a prayer language to direct the church. Prayer with the Holy Spirit is the rule of the church. Lev. 10:1-11 Nadab and Abihu, priests of God were to offered incense to the Lord day and night and this represented prayer (Rev. 8:4) to the Lord. They offered incense with fire from their own fires and God destroyed them for it. We are to pray God’s will be done not ours for the Body of Christ through the Holy Spirit.
