Luke 9:57-62 (NIV)
57 As they were walking along the road, a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head.” 59 He said to another man, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.” 60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” 61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.” 62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”
I have people try to get me to take up a cause that they are preoccupied with. They are usually good causes, but can become a distraction for what God has called us to. When I was a child my father would have me pull weeds from the garden. I soon learned there are no short cuts. By simple cutting off the top of the weed it did not solve the problem it would simply grow back and usually be harder to pull up. You see what was visible on top of the ground was a symptom of what was under the ground. You had to kill the root to get to the real problem. Sin is the real problem and we are called to preach Christ and Him crucified for our sins. Get rid of the root and get rid of the symptom. Jesus simply told me let the dead bury their own dead and follow Him. Doing anything else disqualifies us for the service, or makes us unfit.
