Luke 14:25-27 (NIV)
25 Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: 26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple. 27 And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.
Jesus uses hyperbole here. Which He does a lot. He is overstating to make a point. Our love for Him should dwarf the love we have for everything else in life and this includes life itself. The cross is a thing of brutal execution, it represents shame and humiliation and in this case self-judgement. We put ourselves on the cross. We lose our lives to find it. The world thinks we are fools, and we are for Christ. We are the wisest of fools. Sign me up. Are you sure?
