Devo Walking in faith Part 12
Matthew 14:25-31 (NIV)
25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid. 28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
The one thing in this story I have never heard anyone talk about is the fact the Apostles didn’t recognize Jesus. Why? After all they had been walking close to Him for some time. It was fear. Fear is the opposite of faith. Without faith you can’t see God. Fear will blind you to the truth. It will blind you to who Jesus is and what He is doing. Satan can get people so worked up over if this is God and make them think Jesus and His works are Satan that the miss Jesus. Peter had more faith than all of them. He was the first to be able to say Jesus was the Christ. He realized that Jesus was God before all of them. Faith takes courage too. He was the only one to get out of the boat, but fear blinded him yet again when he saw the waves. Suddenly the waves became bigger than the one who created the universe. Sounds silly in a way, but that is how Satan works. He makes the situation look bigger than our God. Sad but true. It is like the little girl who thought the moon was no bigger than her thumb nail because when she held it up to the moon it would cover it. Perspective or vantage point. Where does Satan have you.? Peter in desperation turned back to Jesus and cried out and I might add this was an act of faith too. When we’re the weakest we are the strongest. Why is it when there is nothing else man or science can do we then cry out to God? Jesus stilled grabbed Peter by the hand. Cry out to Him He will answer, or you could just sink.
