Devo Welcome to the gong show
1 Corinthians 4:19-5:2 (NIV)
19 But I will come to you very soon, if the Lord is willing, and then I will find out not only how these arrogant people are talking, but what power they have. 20 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power. 21 What do you prefer? Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline, or shall I come in love and with a gentle spirit? 5 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that even pagans do not tolerate: A man is sleeping with his father’s wife. 2 And you are proud! Shouldn’t you rather have gone into mourning and have put out of your fellowship the man who has been doing this?
James 2:18-19 (NIV) 18 But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. 19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.
Hebrews 11:1 (KJV) 11 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
Paul was upset because these teachers of the church did not even have enough power in their lives to overcome sin let alone any real evidence or substance of their faith. Our faith is more than a matter of meat and drink, but of righteousness, peace, and joy. It is the power to overcome sin, sickness, and death. James says faith is action and deeds not just belief of the mind. Demons believe in God, but where’s your evidence? Show me your walk not your talk. Is there enough righteousness in your life to convict people of their sin? Is there enough evidence in your life to convict you of being a believer? Evidence and substance will follow faith. No evidence and substance, then better check your faith. High sounding arguments for faith is but a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
