Devo Who gave the most
Luke 21:1-4 (NIV)
21 As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. 2 He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. 3 “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. 4 All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”
The priests would put out a large metal container for the people to put their offerings in at the time of when Jesus walked the earth. The rich would bring in their tithe and drop it in slowly and it would make a loud noise and the people would be impressed by those whose money made the most noise. It was a contest of sorts to see who gave the most, but they would frown on the poor whose mite's made little noise. They were looked down on, but Jesus was impressed with the widow because she gave the most in proportion to what she had. She gave all so she would be bless in proportion to what she gave, not amount. You must interpret scripture in context to the culture of the time to understand completely what Jesus is saying.
